La Dispute by Marivaux Falmouth High School performs La Dispute at the 68th Annual
High School Drama Festival You may or may not have heard, but Falmouth High School made
it to the Finals of the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival
Guild's (MHSDG) 68th Annual Drama Festival. For those not
involved in the theatre or the Festival this does not mean much,
but then again, that's why I'm here. Festival is a chance for schools to really show what they've
got. It displays the best of a school's acting, costuming,
make-up, technical, sound, and lighting abilities. The shows that
make it past the preliminary rounds are really the best there
are, and those that make it past the semi-final rounds are truely
the creme-of-the-crop. All the shows are great, but I know all you really care about
is Falmouth's play. This year we did a production of the French
comedy La Dispute. It is basically the story that is
hilariously funny. The actors are all wonderful. They know their
lines, and have great comedic timing. They know when to stress
the punchline and where to cut corners to make sure the show fits
into the 40 minutes time allotted (35.15 minutes was their best time). The set is wonderfully put together. It is very simple,
leaving much to your imagination, but what is there is
incredibly life-like. The walls look alive with moss and you can
almost believe there's a small pond on stage. The costumes and make-up all transport you back to the 18th
century, where our stage is set. The bright, lively colors of the
costumes add charm and a surreal quality to the arrogant,
aristocratic court, which contrasts beautifully with the subjects
subdued colored dress. The make-up, on both parties, is equally
important to the overall experience of the show and is another
aspect that clearly defined the court as different and more
'cultured' than the subjects. As a whole, it is a seamless production which can be summed up
in a single line, "...very well put together." **Thalia
